Welcome !! The following are recent messages from group members: #1 I am a Cajun from Louisiana,USA.I have learn French from my parents. They were not educated ,and didn't read or write French,or English. We spoke only French at home. When most Cajuns my age started school,we could not speak any English. We only knew the French language we learned at home.We lived in the country, and had no TV, or radio. We had very little contact with the outside world. At the age of 6 in those days all Americans are sent too public schools. That wasthe law.I have never forgotten my French language.I am trying to learn to read it now.I would like some help.If you are willing to help me I would appreciate it so much. Merci! (Membre de FET) #A Hello, I'm kind of self-studying the French language like most everyone here, and I have no one to check my work/progress. I'd like to know if there's anyone out there who has some free time to help me? alternatively, i'd like to ask the moderators if its ok for me to post some short translations/ exercises that I'm doing for group checking? You see it's embarrassingly lower level stuff and I'm concerned it might be inappropriate for advanced speakers in this group. (Nouveau membre de FET) .=2E.. #B Although I'm not a moderator, the posts I have seen over the months since I have joined the group indicate that people with all levels of competence in French or English, from the absolute beginner to the native speaker, are welcome to ask for help or support in learning the language they have not been brought up in. Many people have requested similar help and many others have responded with help and suggested corrections. It is one way to improve your skills in writing the language and translating. Post your efforts both in French and English, so that whoever responds can be clear about what you are attempting to write in the other language. There is no need to be embarrassed about anything, everyone has had to start somewhere. "UC schrieb:" "No, that would be "well English"." "What?!?!? People speak (good English) or they (speak) English (well). Regards, Einde O'Callaghan" Neither you nor John Briggs seem to have noticed the curious usage which prompted UC's reply: "'good' English," as if the poster was questioning his own choice of adjective. Otherwise, why the scare quotes? Raymond S. Wise Minneapolis, Minnesota USA E-mail: mplsray @ yahoo . com

Raymond S. Wise Minneapolis, Minnesota USA E-mail: mplsray @ yahoo . com" "Good English"? Nope. Sorry. No such thing. No adjective of quality can be used with 'English'. "Speak English well" or "Speak English properly" or "Speak English acceptably". But no such thing as "Speak good English" or "Speak bad English". Why? 'English' is a proper name, just like 'Michael' or "Pope Pius X". There is no "good Michael" or "bad Michael". There is no "good Pope Pius X" or "bad Pope Pius X".
