Please explain the verb "tell on"

I'm getting four hours on extra rate of pay. But the extra hours also tell on you at the end of the week.

Thanks.

The extra hours have noticeable effects on you at the end of the week.

You work more than usual.  You get very tired from all the work.
At the end of the week, you feel very tired.  You may also not look your best.  You may look older than you really are because you worked so hard!  The work tells on you.  The work shows its negative effects.
