In the passage below, should I use 'knew that Alan was...' in place of the words italicised?

Alan and his friends were playing hide-and-seek. Alan was the seeker. He had difficulty finding his friends. Suddenly, he thought that one of his friends might be hiding behind a tree near the pond. He ran so fast that he slipped and fell into the pond. He struggled and shouted for help.

Fortunately, his friends heard him and rushed towards the pond. They were shocked as they know that Alan is not a good swimmer. They did not know what to know...

Yes, Past Simple is more suitable here.

«They did not know what to know...» — this one is quite strange to me.

Sorry. It's a typo. It should be They did not know what to do ...
