A very old lady teacher of English ask this question with the class:

When I say "I am beautiful", which tense is it?

One pupil anwers: It's the past of course.

H,

I think a better answer is 'It's the present continuous'.

Old women can be beautiful, too, you know. Youth has just one type of beauty.

Best wishes, Clive

Hey Clive, of course old women can be beautiful, but did you even see that teacher? I mean, if the student answered that way, she must have been very ugly! Stick out tongue [:P]

By the way, it's strange, but that joke works in Italian too. But in Italian there are a lot of jokes similar to that one that wouldn't work in English (tense, time and weather are the same). Jokes are interesting even from a linguistic point of view. Smile [:)]

Hi,

Hey Clive, of course old women can be beautiful, but did you even see that teacher? I mean, if the student answered that way, she must have been very ugly! And the pupil must have been extremely rude and unkind.

There was no real teacher. There was no real pupil. It's just a joke. Smile [:)]

But it is built on the idea that old women can not be beautiful, so I decided to try to express another point of view.

Best wishes, Clive
