Hmmm. Local residents have complained about the music constantly blaring from the club.

The music played in clubs in England certainly have a booming bass, so I inserted booming in place of blaring. Actually in the C.O.E.D. it describes a certain type of large portable cassette player capable of powerful sound as a boom box, so I think that could be correct too.

I think we should keep the discussion in the context of "english as a second language".  I think idioms can be very difficult for the individual whose native tongue is not English. It can be very difficult to teach the meaning of these phrases. I meet with a group of English Teachers in Brazil and answer the questions they pose. I think it's important to differentiate to the students that english speakers function on different levels. When an individual is writing a formal paper for class, the tone of writing will be much more formal than would be expected in casual "english" conversation. The difficulties these ESL teachers encounter is that students need to be prepared for formal writing as well as casual conversation with native "english" speakers. Many of the students here take English so they can work for companies who require fluency of English for business. If those ESL speakers don't have exposure or a working knowledge of idioms commonly used, they will remain confused when engaging in normal conversations. (the business lunch, the dinner after work, a weekend afternoon in a work colleague's home, a joke made in a business meeting, etc.) The goal of ESL teachers is to prepare students to function in a society where mastery of the informal and the formal may be expected.

That said, I think the examples used in the test are a good thing because they are challenging the knowledge base for idiomatic speech. It is not a test of whether English speakers are letting their language "go to the dogs". . . forgive me I couldn't resist
