HI. My name is Matt Firth, and I am the secretary of the European Legal English Teachers' Association.

EULETA was founded to promote continuing professional development for teachers of Legal English. We organise regular events lead by experts in the field, including our biennial conferences. Amy Krois-Lindner, author of the best selling coursebook International Legal English, will be the plenary speaker at our next conference (1-3 May, Ulm, Germany).

Amy will also be presenting our new book, Introduction to International Legal English (CUP 2008, published later this year). I will be presenting with Amy, and will also run a session on PLEAD, a blended learning course I am currently developing for TransLegal: www.translegal.com/plead.

Full details of the 2008 conference, which includes over 20 presentations and workshops run by the best known names in Legal English, are available at www.euleta.org.

Our website (www.euleta.org) is currently being developed and will include a regular newsletter, a lesson share page, conference/workshop papers as well as details on vacant positions and continuing professional development courses. We also have an active discussion list, an excellent networking resource for teachers and translators. The  list can be found at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/euleta/.

I do hope that EULETA will be of interest to you, and would be extremely grateful if you could pass this information on to any colleagues who might be interested.

Hi Matt! Welcome to the Forums and thanks for your notice, it is very interesting (at least) for me. I am delighted to meet someone who paticipated in creation of International Legal English. Having experiences with also other books about Legal English, I consider this one being the best (of course for someone interested in "private" law). I am really looking forward for the new Introduction... will it be only an updated version of ILE, or a complementary material, or something different?

Last year I have passed ILEC exam but I want to continue in improving my legal English. I am a lawyer who wants to use English professionally - so not primarily a linguist. But I know that lawyer-linguists are highly appreciated in EU institutions.

Are legal English teachers mainly linguists who learned something about law or are they lawyers with perfect command of English? What about you? I know there is a potential demand for legal English teaching in Slovakia, but TransLegal has no connections in here. Are you planning to change it? Do you think that I as a lawyer can become a legal English teacher?

Hope you'll answer to my questions and enjoy this Forums. Btw. it's a great opportunity to improve legal English as well.

Hi Matt,

I would like some information about your Legal English Teachers Association (EULETA) and what requirements are necessary for membership.  I have taught English in Berlin, Germany for about four years, and will be moving to Ulm over the summer.  If you have any organisations or groups which I could contact in that region, that would be greatly appreciated.

 Kind regards,

 Priscilla

Hi Priscilla

The best thing would be to check out www.euleta.org or the discussion list as listed above. The website hasn't been updated for a while, but the discussion list is very active and can be a good source of information.

Best
