Explain how Poe(the author) undermines rationality in the story.

It means that rationality (the observing of the world from a sane-mind point of view Stick out tongue [:P]) is left apart. The things I remember from the book tell me that it was a quite surrealistic story, whith occurrences that wouldn't be possible in normal life.
