Hello, would someone please tell me what's the meaning of "the first time around", as in "I escaped the first time around" ? is it differenct from "the first time" ?

No.  around suggests more strongly that there was at least a second time, and perhaps a third, fourth, etc.  the first time around is also more casual than the first time.
