1. Ask someone for help the first time you lift weights.

2. Ask someone for help the first time that you lift weights.

3. Ask someone for help the first time when you lift weights.

Which of the above sentences is NOT acceptable?

in 3, when is not a relative conjunction word, and therefore the sentence is incorrect.

in 1, the conjunction word, that, is ellipted. OK.

2 is OK.

Did you mean in the beginning of every set or when the person has never used the weights before?

I've no problems with when. Perhaps just adding a comma.

The beginning. The first success is always the more intense to a band - when you hear yourself on the radio for the first time, when you fill a big room, when you have your first number 1. You don't go through that again. I had a great time and I feel very proud. We were a very good band and the legend is still intact.

This would be correct: Ask someone for help when you lift weights the first time.
