The four Movement for Democratic Change youth members were abducted on Tuesday and their bodies were discovered in various locations in Chitungwiza, southeast of Harare, on Thursday, said party spokesman Nelson Chamisa.

This sentence is an extract from a news article by AFP. In my opinion the first "The" in the sentence must have been put inadvertently. Am I right?

Thanks

Here is a more complete context.

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AFP)--Zimbabe's opposition said Thursday four more of its supporters had been killed in political violence, amid growing calls to cancel next week's presidential run-off in favor of unity government talks.

The four Movement for Democratic Change youth members were abducted on Tuesday and their bodies were discovered in various locations in Chitungwiza, southeast of Harare, on Thursday, said party spokesman Nelson Chamisa

Saying "The four MDS youth members..." is correct since it refers back to the victims who were mentioned in the first paragraph.
