I think it must mean that the case was solved by the family (no outside intervention was needed).  Guesses by others on the forums can be avoided if more context is provided.

Are you sure the sentence doesn't read, "The case was finally solved"? As is, the sentence is very odd, but if it's correct, then I concur with the first response you received.
