I have studied “The Pearl” which is creatively written by an inspired American writer named John Steinbeck. The characteristic that is portrayed through Juana makes me choose her as the character that I think is brave and heroic.
This Indian-Mexican lady’s courage and bravery is not demonstrated in her physical ability alone. Juana is brave in many ways and for many reasons. It is a definite fact that she is strong both physically and mentally. She is brave to make important decision when her beloved husband, Kino cannot. For instance, when Coyotito is ill from the scorpion bite, she makes the important decision to take her little one to the stingy doctor’s house though she knows it is impossible that the doctor will alleviate her baby. However, she is brave to try her luck and not scared of being scolded by the doctor as her love for her baby is without a shred of doubt.
Another apparent instance that shows Juana is brave when the family encounters the trackers who have been following them since they leave their peaceful village; she tells Kino that they should not split up. Indirectly, from this incident, readers get to know that Juana is not only a brave woman. Besides, she is a very loving mother and wife. This is approved when she refuses to split up as she wants to stay with her husband and baby no matter what will happen in future.
As recounted beforehand, it is evidently proven that Juana is a brave woman. Moreover, she is also prepared to take matters into her own hands when necessary. For example, when she decides to throw away the esteemed pearl back into the sea as she believes the pearl is evil and fiendish. Subsequently, Kino comes and seizes the pearl from her. Kino gets angry and beat her up for her act to throw away the pearl. As a very tough lady, Juana does not shed tears even when Kino hits her.
Truthfully, in my forthright opinion, Juana’s bravery is a good exemplar to be followed. Even in the end of this pathetic novel, she stands by her husband and manages to control her sorrow because of the death of her dearly loved son. Being brave and determined is the key for a better and superior life in future.
