I would like to know what the correct application of the word 'that' is. For example in the following sentence:

We confirm our client is aware that time is of the essence and we therefore request your response as soon as possible.

Or should it read: We confirm our client is aware, time is of the essence and we therefore request your response as soon as possible.

The 'that' is optional, and the comma before 'time' should be deleted in the second sentence.

'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master-- that's all.'
