Are there any rules as to when the hyphen should be used with nouns?
For example, is it the drumkit, the drum kit or the drum-kit?
How do we know when there should be a hyphen, when there should not be one, and when the words can be written separately?

'Drum kit' would be the expected form. Normally noun/noun formations do not hypenate unless together they serve as an adjective: 'Drum kit'; 'drum-kit instructions'
