One reason for this is its great mystery. No one knows for sure who Mona Lisa really was. Da Vinci kept a diary of all his other portrait sittings, but he never wrote down who posed for the Mona Lisa.

Does "portrait sittings" in the above refer to "persons who sat as a portrait model?" If not, what is it?

Besides, can I replace "wrote down" with "recorded?" Thanks.

No, it means a session of painting with (sitting)  models.

Recorded is perhaps too modern for the context, but it's OK.
