(Ramona's aunt quarelled with her groom about the wedding.)

"Beezus and Ramona exchanged a "there-goes-the-wedding" look.

Please help me with the high-light sentence. What does it mean?

Thanks so much.Love

It means they looked at each other as if to say "that's ruined the wedding!".

 I love Beverly Cleary's books!

The trick of hyphenating a string of words to form an adjective is often used in light, humorous writing. Sometimes the hyphenated string is carried to almost ridiculous lengths, which adds another "layer" to the humor. Unfortunately I can't think of any examples offhand.

One thing I love about her stuff is that my kids enjoy them as much as I did. The stuff that happens to the kids in the book still makes sense to kids today. It doesn't have to be full of things like Gameboys or Rollerblades or other more recent concepts to be enjoyable!
