Dear tutors,Smile [:)]

I have four sentences.

Imagine you are planning a new town.
1. It's important that there should be public librairies.
2. It's vital that there should be a good public transport system.
3. It's important that there should be plenty of open spaces.
4. It's essential that there should be enough car parks.
I tried to rewrite them. I would like to know if the following sentences have the same meanings.
1. It's important that there are public librairies.
2. It's vital that there is a good public transport system.
3. It's important that there are plenty of open spaces.
4. It's essential that there are enough car parks.
Thanks in advance....

They look good to me.  Although watch your spelling of libraries (not "librairies").

I would go for the subjunctive myself, since it seems to be a formal essay:

1. It's important that there be public libraries.
2. It's vital that there be a good public transport system.
3. It's important that there be plenty of open spaces.
4. It's essential that there be enough car parks.

I totally agree.  However, if the subjunctive just sounds too formal, replace it with "that we have".

Thank you so much for all your answers. Rose [F] Smile [:)]

I’m not used to the type of sentence such as “It's important that there should be public libraries” as proposed in my book.  That's why I tried to change it a little bit.  I thought the original sentence was already a subjunctive sentence. Embarrassed [:$]
