"Hangman" by Maurice Ogden

Into our town the hangman came,

Smelling of gold and blood and flame.

He paced our bricks with a diffident air

And built his frame on the courthouse square.

It's 30 stanzas in length.  Note that most copies of the poem on the interned say "different" in the third line.  "Difficent" is correct.  Outstanding poem about apathy.  The whole town said "I don't care."

Maurice Ogden, aren't they a guy? I have to do a biography on him (chose him over a list of hundred year old poets...just because of the Hangman, great poem.) But I can't find any information about him online... When there's no wiki article you know you're in trouble.

I love the last stanza of the poem,

"Beneath the beam that blocked they sky

none before stood as alone as I.

The Hangman then strapped me...with no voice there

to cry 'Stay!'... for me in the empty square."

Ah... Ok, I'm wrong. I have a tendency to do that.

I'm the same guy as from above.

No I'm not saying your wrong, but I just think Maurice sounds like a man's name. I still can't find any information on him online... anyone know any sites?
