Is there any difference between 'They have different pencils' a 'They have a different number of pencils' ?

Thanks

Success - it is not the position where you are standing, but which direction you are going.

Yes. In the second sentence the difference is in the number of pencils. In the first it could be any type of difference between the pencils themselves.
