Q2: Please check under the hood, too. What is "the hood"?

Q3: A woman stops at a full-service gas station. What  does "a full-service gas staion" include?

Q4: Let me have $10 of the premium. What kind of gas is "the premium"?

Q5: It was nothing serious. Just a sticking carburetor. What is "a sticking carburetor"?

Thank you very much!

1. Fill her up with regular: Fill up the car (in the style of ships being referred to as "her") with the lowest grade of gasoline.

2. The hood covers the engine. Opposite of the trunk.

3. The attendants pump your gas for you.

4. Premium is the highest grade of gasoline.

5. Carburetors are no longer used in cars, they are only found in older cars. They are devices that regulate the flow of gasoline. One that is sticking isn't working properly, one of the parts sticks to another part and doesn't return to it's position properly.

Regular gas: 87 octane

Mid: 89 octane

Premium: 91 octane

Hi guys,

I'd like to add a 'cultural comment' that most people in N. America put gas in their cars themselves now, at a self-service gas station. I don't remember the last time I needed to say anything like 'Fill it up, please'.

Best wishes, Clive
