Hi,
1. I think both of these show the use of a  comma due to the existence of another element. If there were no element like that present, commas would not been necessary. Am I right? (Did I make the subjunctive right by pluralizing the verb 'was'??)

We are looking at sentences, as well as phrases, that are ten words or less.

2. Does the underlined part modify the words 'reports' and 'business letters' and is it an essential element for theml like for 'texts'?

We are looking at writings that appear in reports, business letters, adn other texts written in complete sentences.

3. Does this sentence correct? Is the word 'surfaced' an intransitive verb here? A similar form (as far as I can tell) was told to me as intransitive. That being this: The photo was hung on the wall.

Nothing constructive (or no constructive suggestion) was surfaced at our last meeting.

1.  Correct use of comma.  [Actually, we don't really 'pluralize' the verb to form the subjunctive -- it just looks like the plural. (:)) Smile

2. I would say that it modifies texts only.  If you want it to modify all, use something like texts, all written...

3.  'surfaced'
is the form you want.

Thank you. I think the part "that are ten words or less" of my sentence is essential, thus requiring no comma. Look at it this way, please:

We are looking at sentences, as well as phrases, that are ten words or less.

We are looking at sentences that are ten words or less, as well as phrases.

To me, both sentences treat the part "that are ten words or less" as essential but the first and original sentence has no comma because it has the appositive element "as well as phrases" in my opinion. Shoud I word "less" as "fewer"?

Thank you.

For the following question 2 of mine, which is pasted below:

2. Does the underlined part modify the words 'reports' and 'business letters' and is it an essential element for theml like for 'texts'?

We are looking at writings that appear in reports, business letters, adn other texts written in complete sentences.

You said this:

2. I would say that it modifies texts only.  If you want it to modify all, use something like texts, all written...

Then, would you say the underlined part modifies one or all three?
