Hi,
superintendence /overseeing/supervision
What's the difference among the three words? They are almost identical when you look at the dictionary.
The abstract noun for oversee is oversight.
The related nouns for people are superintendent, overseer and supervisor. In the workplace, these are used as follows.
Superintendent. Sounds very official, often with regulatory powers and responsibilities. eg a Superintendent of Schools.
Supervisor. Less important than 'superintendent'. Usually only a low or first-level boss. eg an office supervisor.
Overseer. Not a commonly used term. Sounds quite archaic now. If you have seen the movie 'Ben-Hur', the overseer was the boss of the galley-slaves, who were all chained to their oars. Wait a minute, that sounds like the office I used to work in!
Best wishes, Clive
