Can I say,

(a) They decided to buy a watch for their mother to be a present because Mother's day was coming soon.

Try this wording instead:

Because Mother's Day was coming (soon), they decided to buy a watch as a present for their mother.

Can I say, 

(a) They decided to buy a watch for their mother as a present because Mother's day was coming soon.

(b) They decided to buy a watch for their mother as a present because tomorrow was Mother's Day.

You need to change these round as otherwise it is not clear who the present is for.
