Hi,

what's the difference between

She plays the piano.
and
She plays piano.

I'd say they are both correct, but the greatly more common expression is the former.

I just checked via Google, and it's play the piano by a ratio of 2 to 1.

Best wishes, Clive

She plays piano is not found in standard (? any other form of) British English in the sense of imparting information that the person in question has the ability to play that instrument. It may perhaps be found in a phrase such as She plays piano in the orchestra.

I've always been taught you have to use the article when saying you (can) play a music instrument: play the piano, play the guitar... I'm not familiar with "she plays piano", except maybe to mean "she plays slowly": "chi va piano va sano"

I'm glad to help, but I'm not a native! And please excuse my typos...
