 Hi dear all,

I heard one of the CEOs said the following sentence to wrap up the meeting. Or, this is what I think I heard to be precise:

Let's keep up the good work so that we can continue to sport.

My friend who is a native American says this sentence is not natural, to say the least, but ... Is this sentence that bad? Or it can be a creative use of the word "sport"...? How do you think?

Any comments will be very much appreciated! Thanks.

The only meaning I can attribute to it is that if they continue to prosper, they can continue to live the good life (not necessarily playing golf and tennis, but possibly).

"I saw your wife last night sporting a brand new mink coat."  I don't know if this expression is still used, but in my experience it's always transitive.

Hi Avangi,

Thank you so much for your input! "Prosper" is a good word :)))

Judging from what you said, you wouldn't recommend us to use this expression. I wouldn't use it myself, but it is really good to know how you natives feel.

Have a great evening!

I"ve been trying to think of what word you might have misheard that sounds like "sport" and I can't. I still think it was misheard, but I can't suggest what the right word should have been.

"Support" is a word you might be very likely to hear at that kind of meeting, but it doesn't make sense substituted for "sport" in the sentence. Maybe "so we can continue our support"?

I agree that "support" and "sport" can sound very much the same.  For some reason I failed to pick up on the fact that it was spoken, although that was clearly stated.  It's too bad we don't have a bit more context.

This is exactly what my friend said. It seems not likely though that I took "support" for "sport" because "support" wouldn't fit in so well in the context I remember. Besides he concluded the meeting with that sentence, followed by no object.

Actually I was so impressed by that short speech, sort of, that I wrote that sentence down (although I left my note at work..). I go and check again.

Hopefully I come back with additional info. Thank you again, for your help!

"Thank you for your continued support" is a common closer, but would be hard to mistake.
