What is the difference between increase to and increase by? (as in - increased by 10%.....increased to $50,000). I think I know the meaning but little confused...need more examples.

Please explain with some examples. Thanks!

'Increase to' should be followed by the new total figure.  For example:  Last year, my farm had thirty sheep.  The flock has now increased to thirty-six sheep.

'Increase by' should be followed by the amount you are adding to the initial amount.  For example, my flock has increased by six sheep.  My flock has increased by 20%.

This town two years ago, had a population of 5000.  Survey conducted early this year has indicated , the number has increased to 8000.-[To] has a specific, or more defined context.

Based on data collected, the town's projected population growth in the next 5 years will be increased by 5000 each year.- [By] has a suggestive meaning of "being close to".
