But they're not ridiculous to them, because for them, these are issues that relate to their identity. They see themselves as preserving this historical attachment that gives meaning and purpose to who that are.

Is to who that are makes sense? Please clarify.

No, it doesn't make sense.

I think it's an error for 'who they are'.
