He told Sarah that he had checked the question

Is the sentence OK in terms of introduction clause "He told Sarah that.."? What is the difference between "He told Sarah that..." and "He said to Sarah that..."?

I don't see any difference, really. I suppose if he had left her a note, you could still say he had "told" her, even if the words weren't spoken. If he "said" it, it was verbal.

Barbara, who answers in American English. My housekeeping skills attest to the truth of the second law of thermodynamics: Left to themselves, things get more and more random!

I feel that told is more frequently used in this context today.
"He said to Sarah" is seen mostly in biblical contexts.
