My interpretation:

Trip - traveling a limited time for leisure. [As in visiting relatives which stay in another city.]

Travel - more on a 'need to do' basis. [As in traveling for work to another country or abroad to reach a vacation spot.]

Journey - an extended trip, usually for personal enlightenment. [As in visiting several cultural hot-spots and art museums across Europe.]

Excursion - brief pleasure trip. [As in making an excursion to a favorite picnic spot for the day.]
