'treatment' means what in this??

Metaphor, as a typical feature of communication, presents a challenge for translation too, both for the practising translator and for its treatment in the discipline of Translation Studies.

                       I don't know if treatment means handling or method or discussion or something else.

So could you please define/explain what treatment mean in the above sentence? And is the usage common?
