We __ the rose bushes all day. I apologize that the front gardens are so messy.

(A) trim
(B) are trimming
(C) have trimmed
(D) have been trimming

I chose (D), but I think (C) sounds fine too. What if I have finished trimming rose and left all the mess before cleaning it up?

Please advise.

all day (the whole day) shows continuity of the work, and that requires IMO D

We trimmed the rose bushes earlier in  the day. I apologize that the front gardens are still so messy.
