The sun intensified the heat in the room so much that they finally had to turn the air on.

 

Hi,

The above is a stand-alone example. Does the bolded part make sense to you? Is it better to reword it as "turn the air-conditioner on?" Thanks.

I'm sure any American would understand turn the air on in that sentence.  We might also call it the AC

I probably would not word it as turn the air conditioner on unless I knew for sure that what was being turned on was a small device (e.g a device fitted in a window).  Otherwise, I might say turn the air conditioning on.
