1. What's the difference between emulate and imitate?

2. For instance, certain characters not only have no remorse for their immoral actions, but also frequently go unpunished by larger society.

Does "larger society" here mean larger part of the society or general public?

Hi
If you emulate someone, you try to be the same, or even better than they are.

If you imitate someone, you try to copy them.

I think it would be proper to insert 'the':  unpunished by the larger society.
Another way of putting it would be by society at large.

The general public is also appropriate.
