Hi guys,

May I ask you for help in the next two situations?

1) Context:

Greg, head of the SWAT team, is asking Sam, how they should make a contact with the robber in the bank..

Good. So, how do we make a connection with this guy? Can talk anybody out of anything if he thinks you don't understand.

Does the underlined part mean "He could stand mute, if he thinks you don't understand"??

2) Context:

Psychologist is givining an advice to police officers, how they should speak with the guy, who lost his job and decided to rob a bank.

Okay, you need to look for inadequate personality, substance abuse. Appeal to shared experience, validate his emotional reality.

I kinda have a problem with the whole point of what she said...Crying...Did she say..."You have to find out whether he is inadequate personality, or whether he used drugs. Show him that you have the same experience, figure out his emotional reality" ...Is that correct?

thank you guys in advance for your help...

Best Regards and nice weekend to all !!

I think connection is used as 'closeness'. So 'Can't convince him not to do it (whatever it is) if he thinks

you have no idea of how he feels.

Maybe 'You need to find a weak link in his personality, see if he's into some kind of drugs.

Make him think you experienced sth like him, find out what is his emotional state.'

As it stands this doesn't make much sense but if you change it as indicated it does (kind of).

Good. So, how do we make a connection with this guy? [You] Can't talk anybody out of anything if he thinks you don't understand [him].

“Okay, you need to look for inadequate personality, substance abuse. Appeal to shared experience, validate his emotional reality.”

Find some way to make the guy think you understand what he is going through (even if it's not true, the guy doesn't have to know that) so you can convince him to give himself up.
