Understanding verbs

How does one distinguish between a verb that describes function and one that can articulate intellect? For instance one could say that one provided and that would be functional. Alternatively one could say that one created and that would be ascribed as demonstrating intellect. Then again; to explain = function; to articulate = intellect. I am unsure as to where I might find a comprehensive resource that might clarify these two distinct methods of verb usuage.

I'm not at all sure that this is a realistic task - for instance I doubt anyone could "explain" anything without using intellect, yet you classify that as functional.

Is this sort of classification something which is done in your own language? I cant recognise it in any English classification systems that I know!
