We're talking about University of Michigan or Michigan University. Which is the correct version?

University of Michigan |

'University of Oxford', is more commonly referred to as 'Oxford University' by native speakers, I presume. Can we refer to 'University of Michigan' as 'Michigan University'?

I am an American football fan, so I am quite familiar with college football teams and their names.
University of South California – We call it “USC”
Stanford - Everyone knows it’s a top-notch privately operated University
Harvard – needs no introduction, we all know it’s a University.
UCLA – University of Calif. at Los Angles.
San Francisco State [University] is not the same as UCSF which is University of California at San Francisco.
So once a university name is established, it’s better to leave it as it’s known.
