I. General Characteristics of Ha Nam Province

1.Location and topography

            Ha Nam is in the southern gate of the Ha Noi capital, it is located on the important north-south road with the national highway No. 1A  and the north-south railway. Ha Nam localed of the Red river delta, had the land of 851,96 square kilometres, accounting for 0.03 % of the total area of Viet Nam. Phu Ly Town, 50km far from Hanoi, is culture and economic center of Ha Nam province. Ha Tay in the north, Hung Yen and Thai Binh in the east, Nam Dinh and Ninh Binh in the south.

            Other important roads such as national highways No. 21, No. 21B and No. 38 from Dong Van to Yen Lenh and more provinces in the Red river delta. In addition, Ha Nam has more rivers go through such as: Red river, Day river, Chau river, and Nhue river.

            Ha Nam is a plain province bordering with mountains, so there is a contrast between plain and mountainous areas.

              The west of the province is the mountainous area, the main minerals are limestone which are materials for cement  and construction materials.. With caves and historical and cultural places, the area also has a great potentiality to develop tourism zones.

            The east of the province is the plain made of alluvium from big rivers  with fat land, which is not only suitable with cultivation of rice, vegetables and other agriculture goods but also suitable develop processing industry and ecological tourism.

2. Population

 According to the latest statistics in 2005, Ha Nam has a population of 823,9 people, with the population density of 967 people per kilometre, ,the rural population is 744,8 people accounting for  90,4%.

            Level of learning: According to the  statistics in 2003-2004, Ha Nam has more than 23% rate populations  over 5 ages go to school. But the rate of people with high school level less than other provinces. So Ha Nam need to strong develop education systems, special over high school.

   Populations forecast:  Ha Nam has the natural growth rate is small, According to the  statistics in 2004  the natural growth rate is  1.55% a year. Forecast In 2010, the natural growth rate of 1. 5 % a year and the province will has a population of 849 people, Less than in project report 97 (955 thousand people).

3. Socio-economic achievements of Ha Nam province 2001-2005

            Since the re-establishment of the province, Ha Nam has made considerable progresses and important achievements in socio-economy. The province's GDP increases highly , faster than the growth rate of the whole country and some other provinces in the region. There is a positive change in economic structures with higher proportion of industry and services. The economic, educational, cultural and educational levels of the population are comparatively high, the income and living standard is improved considerably.

·         Scale and grow of the economic

            In 2005, the province ‘s GDP is 2.892 billion VND, it is 2,21 times as its in 1996 and 1,54 times as its in 2000. However, the economic scale of Ha Nam is still small. In some nearly years, Ha Nam ‘s GDP is around 0.52 % of Viet Nam ‘s GDP.

In the period 1996-2005, The province's GDP increases highly , faster than the growth rate of the whole country and some other provinces in Viet Nam.
