Hi Abbie

Thank you for your explanation. Ok! I would like to know what different usages of the word "stat" are there in english other than that is being used in medical language meaning "immediately".

Awaiting your reply...

Actually, Pagal, I am not aware of any other meaning.
Pertiwi suggested a different use. It may be the case that people in other work areas have thought that STAT is an acronym. Accordingly they may have made up the sentence for which they think it is an abbreviation.

Pertiwi suggested
'short turn around time'

Hi
Is it "stat." or just "stat"?
The acronym stat. might stand for statutory.

Hi Pagal and Richard. It's interesting to learn that in legal terms "stat." can be short for statutory.

In the context of the medical question originally asked by Antonia however, it is just as explained - "statim" i.e. immediately. Smile [:)]

You are perfectly right. "stat" means immedately. ''Dip her urine stat.'' means test her urine by dipping a test strip immedately.

I work in a medical laboratory, and we process some samples in a STAT lab. In this context, the word STAT cannot mean immediately, as the sample first has to be centrifuged and typed into a computer for a machine readable barcode to be produced. The barcode is then placed on the sample, and  the sample placed on an analyser. The analyser samples the specimen, adds specific reagents to produce an enzymatic or colorimetric reaction. Then after several muniutes, results are produced, sent to the machine analyser, then on to the patients records. All  this means a " short turn around time " of less than an hour.
