Hi,
What does it mean when a doctor says to a nurse for a patient: ''Dip her urine stat.''
I'm confused with teh word ''stat'' here. Thank you.

Hi Antonia,

"stat" is short for the Latin word "statim" which means 'immediately'. It is therefore an instruction to do something immediately or urgently.

Really? Could it be 'short turn around time' in this context?

Hi Pertiwi,

As a medical instruction it does come from the Latin "statim" - and is used on drug charts etc. to indicate that a dose of medication should be given immediately.

It may have been adapted in other situations to mean 'short turn around time' - although this would not make sense in the context of dipping a test stick into a urine specimen. The prevailing use of Latin in medical instructions may be to ensure universal understanding.

Hi Abbie, Pertiwi, and Antonia

I am pleased with your discussion. Let me also share. I am a proof reader in a Medical Transcription Company and I have come across the following sentence a number of times - "Labs were done stat in the office."
Does not it represent that STAT means "at the same time" or "immediately".

Hello Pagal,

if you are speaking of medical terminology, "stat" always means immediately.
