I was given a comprehension. Here is an extract from it :

... He would die for the right if needs be, he would be true to himself, sincere with his soul. And in this was portrayed the victory of the spirit over the flesh..

The question that I was supposed to answer was:

Write a sentence of at least ten words using the word "spirit" unchanged in form but with a different meaning from that which it carries in the passage.

 My answer:

The fight that took place during the gameplay was against the spirit of the game.

Are the two usages different in meaning?

I consulted the oxford dictionary. It says:

spirit. n

1 the part of person that consists of their character and their feelings rather than their body, often believed to survive after their body is dead .2.a supernatural being.3 typical character, quality,or mood: the spirit of the times.4 (spirits) a person's mood.5 the real meaning of something as opposed to its strict interpretation: the rule had been broken in spirit if not in letter.7 esp.Brit. strong alcoholic drink, such as tum.8 purified distilled alcohol, such as methlylated spirit.

If the 2 usages are different, I would be glad if you could guide me which usage corresponds to which meaning.

Thanks a lot.

Regards,

Ritwik
