Hi guys, a quick question about the use of "the former .. the latter".

I understand that this is often used in formal speech... but I would like to know if this sentence is ok

" the use of different materials achieves 2 purposes: the former to assess the method, the latter to provide a comparison"

I know this is a silly sentence...but just wanted to know about the correctness of the "former ...latter" part Emotion: smile

You've used the words wrongly.

Whl626I find that the sentence is OK

The following is an example of the use of 'former'.

Tom and Dick were both heroes but only the former is remembered today.
The different materials must have been mentioned much earlier.
Based on my own understanding, the word "former" is another term for aforementioned so if you didn't mention anything previously, then there is no former. The same goes with the "latter" which means last-mentioned.

Better usage of these words are like the following examples:

I've been to Paris and Australia last year. I find the former a better place to live in rather than the latter.

----Meaning, I somewhat find Paris a better place to live in than in Australia.

thanks a lot for the tips...I agree that I should mention specifically the 2 words I'm referring to.... before using former/latter

And you are most welcome Masaria.

you can use 'one' and 'the other' in that sentence instead. unless you expect your reader what you are referring to as the former and the latter.
