In US we have a Patriot Act and a Patriot Missile.  Neither has put a shine on the word "patriot."  The true patriots are seldom so called.

<The true patriots are seldom so called.>

What's your definition of a true patriot, Avangi?

I guess I walked into that one!

It's difficult to come up with one which would exclude Adolph Hitler.  (Are you sure we're in the right forum?)

Hi,

Coincidentally, here is the first verse of my national anthem.

Clive

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
Oh Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
Oh Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

In the U.S, the last words of the national anthem is sometimes said to be "Play ball!"

Are the last words of the Candian national anthem the sound of the puck dropping? We always had that anthem at our hockey games in college. Much easier to sing.

Please forgive us non-confrontational Americans for dancing around this word.  When I teach the word, I define it as a person who loves his or her country.  Patriotic music is music which praises one's homeland.  In the US, patriotism has unfortunately been usurped by a kind of xenophobia.  I wonder whether we can clearly differentiate between 'patriot' and 'nationalist'.

Actually, I think that a lot of left-leaning Americans look at our current president and the Patriot Act, and think "OH NOEZ THE CONCEPT OF THE AMERICAN PATRIOT HAS BEEN USURPED. OBVIOUSLY THERE'S NO SUCH THING ANY LONGER."

The reality is that American patriots still exist.  We just no longer agree as a nation about what constitutes American ideals.

To me, someone who protests against illegal immigrant rights is a patriot.

I would imagine that many on these forums would argue that the counter-protesters are more patriotic.
