What does it mean by visible minorities in the following sentence? Are there invisible minorities? BTW, could you tell me an example of visible minorities in British, Canada or USA? Thanks a lot!

Trent University is an employment equity employer, and especially invites applications from women, aboriginal people, visible minorities and persons with disabilities.

Truths are hard to prove, rumors are easy to make.

It seems strange that they specify visible minorities, and not just include all minorities. Visible minority - means people who are clearly part of a minority, for example Africans, whereas an invisible minority means people who are not obviously part of a minority, for example Irish people, who are counted as a minority in the UK but look just like British people.

Yep! We Irish are generally an audible minority - we distinguish ourselves by our accents.

Yes, invisible minorities tend to be composed of things such as religion, nationality and people who don't like football.
Trent University obviously wants people it can point to to prove it isn't biased or bigoted, they don't seem to want the invisible minority types.

I believe visible minority means those with a distinct skin colour or feature . Poeple who you can easily tell which ethnic group they belong to . In England , this includes Chinese, Indians, Pakistanis and Black people .

Nothing is impossible to a willing heart. But I finally realised that it is really impossible if you don't put your money where your mouth is.
