I wish I were...or I wish I was? Subjunctive mood suggests were but this is not preceded by "if"

"I wish I were" is considered higher register, which is what should be used in a test situation. However, many say "I wish I was". My advice is to use "were" unless everyone around you is using "was". When in Rome, do as the Romans.
