Ni Hao Thunder,

'WaWaWa' - Was that Chinese. I happened to listen to a chinese song called GangaHara. It was really soulful. Do you speak Mandarian or Cantonese.

I have also come to know that the difference between Mandarian and Cantonese is not as subtle as we would like to imagine. Am I right?

hehe, yeah, the difference is very UNsubtle! For all intents and purposes, Cantonese and Mandarin are 2 completely different languages. They're related, so they share a lot of common grammar rules and have some words that are similar...I'd say they're about as similar as French and Spanish. That's a pretty bad comparison, but it's the closest thing I can think of with my limited language knowledge...I'll give you a couple of examples (spelled out phonetically) to help you see what I mean...

How are you?

Cantonese: lay ho ma?

Mandarin: nee how ma? (this is phonetically spelled out according to American English, not using pinyin)

See, those are pretty similar...totally different tones (which aren't indicated here), but similar structure and some similar words.

I want to eat a little something.

Cantonese: ngoh seyung sik yet-tee yee-ah. (again, this is phonetic, not the Yale system)

Mandarin: woh ssee-ang chr yee dee-an(r) dong-see.

Both dialects use the same words, but totally different sounds.

Also, Cantonese has like 7 tones, whereas Mandarin has 5...and there's no falling-rising tone in Cantonese like there is in Mandarin.

Does that help at all? My phoneticized spelling isn't really all that close on some words because they're not sounds we use in English, really.

hi haoqide, ur chinese r suprising . how long have u studied for chinese?
the knowledge which u have in cantonese is better than me.
altough I live in a province where Cantonese is popular.
but I seldom study that.
have u been to China?

haoqide  #36328  Wed, 07 Jul 04 07:16 PM
??, ??. ????????!

I've been studying for about a year and 3 months now. I can't really say it's all been on my own that I've learned it; I have some friends on Yahoo IM and on MSN that help me out a lot when I have questions.

Yep, I've heard that Shenzen has a lot of Cantonese speakers. How far is Shenzen from Guangdong? Believe me, my Cantonese is pretty pathetic, worse than my Mandarin! It's easy to rattle off facts about a language, but speaking it is something else entirely!

?????????????????????? ?????????? I hope all that made sense...my grammar isn't very good, and I'm not good at reading han zi, so I'm not sure if Shanghai was right...sorry.

???????

Oh, I added you to my MSN. When you log on next, you'll see me there.Smile [:)]

as far as shenzhen. it's a modern city which is located in the south of Guang Dong Province.

shanghai is a big city in China. now it's a window of reform and openess of China .
it's worthy to visit.

I have never been to USA. but I hope to have chances to study there for my master degree.

I am curious ur nickname in this forum. could u tell me the meaning.
