It’s a difficult question for any man to answer… Whether to follow his dreams no matter what… Or to give in slowly and let life lead you where it will.

I found this statement under the definition of cleft in Merriam-Webster dictionary.

2cleft:

partially split or divided; specif: divided about halfway to the midrib <a cleft leaf>

Here is an illustration of a 'cleft leaf':

Here is an illustration of a leaf that is not a cleft leaf.  Instead, you would say that the edge of the leaf is notched:

BTW, see:

mid·rib
: the central vein of a leaf

So that means:

divided about halfway to the central vein of a leaf.

What does about halfway mean in the above given context?

Approximately halfway, approximately to the halfway point (between the edge and the middle of the leaf)

divided about halfway to the central vein of a leaf.

What is the function of to in the above sentence?

Preposition.

It's used in expressions of distance:

from HERE to THERE

to indicate the end point.
