The letters PhD stand for the Latin distinction of Philosophiae Doctor.

Usenet is like a herd of performing elephants with diarrhea - massive, difficult to redirect, awe-inspiring, entertaining, and a source of mind-boggling amounts of excrement...

I am in the need of an accurate explanation of what the letters "Ph.D." truly stand for after an individual's name/title...

Quote from Wikipedia:

Doctor of Philosophy, abbreviated Ph.D. or PhD for the Latin philosophiæ doctor, meaning "teacher of philosophy"

It is a degree, based on research, awarded by universities that carry the title "Dr." (not a medical doctor). So you may find a name like:

Dr. John Doe

or to avoid confusion that John Doe is a medical doctor,

John Doe, Ph.D.
