Here is an example of "used for" in context: A tooth brush is used for brushing your teeth. (noun  verb). It explains what you use the toothbrush to do.

used for tells the purpose of a tool.  Place the name of a tool in front of it and an expression with an -ing word after it.

A pen is used for writing.
A knife is used for cutting.
Soap is used for washing.
Sugar is used for making foods sweet.
A hammer is used for driving nails into wood.
