Cross-class communication refers to the challenges and difficulties of one group of people communicating with people from a different social class. It is basically like cross-
cultural communication, but within a common language. For instance, in England if someone from Oxford hears someone speak with a Mid-west accent they may assume the person form the Mid-west is less intelligent because of the reputation of the area and social class and these assumptions create barriers to communication. It is similar with Southern accents in the United States.
The New London Voice is usually the same as something called
Estuary English and refers to the accent of English spoken around south-west England, expecially London. The reason for name is that in the past the 'standard' or 'correct English came from Oxford but now, because of the media the London accent (David Bekham for example) is being used by a wide variety of people from all over England.
Some people say that
The New London Voice helps
Cross-class communication because if everyone uses
The New London Voice no one will be able to identify which social class another person belong to, because both rich and poor people will be speaking with the same accent (something that never happened in the past) and so there will be less barriers to communication
Does that help?
