A cockney accent is catagorized by a few pornounciation issues.

1. The drop of any T that is in the middle or end of a word.

gutter = gu'er

patter = pa'er      etc.

2. The drop of the H sound.

happy = appy

hello = ello

3. Vowels are elongated and distorted.

hey... I've got a question:
if you don't have the cockney accent originally but you want to learn it...
is learning to speak cockney equal to mockney??
hope you know what I mean... Embarrassed [:$]

A word of caution about "speaking Cockney". Italy is full of regional dialects and pronunciations. They are very interesting for foreigners and I understand some of them, but I would never dream, even after 30 years in Italy, of trying to speak these dialects except for a moment, just for fun.
Unless you are completely fluent in English and have an excellent ear, you will sound ridiculous.
It's different for people in immigrant communities who have absorbed the language they hear around them, in an almost unconscious manner. They speak Cockney mixed with their own accent, but in a more spontaneous way, which may be quaint but not ridiculous.

I agree with Nona that you should avoid rhyming slang!

I agree that it is a bad idea to try and learn a specific regional accent artificially too. You will sound quite peculiar.

I think the last person suggested that you would be laughed at for trying to do an accent and failing to get it right. they weren't saying that people with genuine Cockney accents were funny.

Cockney is a kind of dialect in England. It is spoking by the working class brits, so it's just a way of talking. They sound English of course, but they just have different ways of prenouncing certain phrases.
